Pistol Safety Course

Learn firearms safety, law and familiarization of handguns and ammunition, how to handle a weapon safely, and laws regarding use of firearms in self-defense. This one evening course  will cover many do’s and don’ts  for carrying a weapon for self defense.  As part of the course those students who wish to later apply for a concealed handgun permit may take a written test, and upon successful completion of the test,  a certificate will be provided that will allow you to apply for a Virginia Concealed Weapons Permit with the local court. No gun ownership required.   If you have a gun do not bring it to class until the instructor instructs you to do so. Class open to any age 21 or older. This course meets one evening.   Time: 6-9pm.

Cost per student: $55 residents/non-residents: $65   Each course limited to 10 students.

Instructor: Perry Bartels is a 22 year police veteran and firearms instructor. He is a certified instructor with the Virginia Department of of Criminal Justice Services. Must register 5 days in advance of the course.

Tai Chi
Looking to improve balance and reduce stress. Tai Chi is a low impact, form of Asian exercise designed to improve flexibility and incorporates breathing and meditation in to the course. Many adults take this class to lower fall risk and improve balance.
Location: Municipal Building  class meets 4:30-5:30pm

Boating Safety Course
Virginia now requires all operators of boats and personal water craft to take a Safe Boating and Jet Ski Course.  The Virginia Boater Education Course is offered free at Poquoson Municipal Building, thanks to Poquoson Community Recreation and Flotilla 63–  Poquoson. Class Offerings for Spring of 2017:

One Stroke Painting Class
How would you like to paint on canvas, wood, fabric or glass? Be successful and able to design after your very first lesson. Experience the ease and fun of one stroke painting techniques using the Donna Dewberry method. This course is a basic tool and brush study to get you started to paint. Learn the basics of brush loading, tools of the trade, and stroke techniques. All supplies provided for paints and brushes.  Students should bring 1 9” x 12” sketch book  or larger to each class for practice painting.

Redo Furniture Painting Workshop
Ages 13 to Adult
Turn trash to treasure and learn how to paint or
refinish furniture. Learn about choosing paints, best paints for the job, and how to dry/wet distress the finish. Class will cover choosing color combinations, and learn up to 3 different paint techniques. This course will also cover  how to seal your work as well as how to use clear/dark waxes on furniture. All supplies will be provided and participants should wear a smock or painting clothes.  Monday Evening, March 27 6:30-8:30pm

Canvas Paint Project Using  One Stroke Technique- Shells
Welcome spring with this SHELL project. This shell design is perfect for canvas, glass, walls and furniture!  This project involves multiple strokes and techniques in learning decorative painting.  Please bring a sketchbook (9”x12” or larger), all other supplies provided.

Self Defense Course
Ages 16* to adult
Do you have anxiety about your personal safety?  Gain confidence and techniques with practical applications to allow you to channel your fear into strength by
learning and practicing basic self defense tactics. This course will allow you to explore the legal issues related to self defense and put actions into practice. Students should wear loose comfortable  athletic clothing and athletic shoes as the course will have classroom and moderate physical activity.
(Please no shorts.) Course will be held two nights from 6-9pm at the Municipal Building.
Class Dates:  March 6 and March 13
Cost: $82 per participant
*participants may be younger if accompanied by parent/guardian. Must have a minimum of 4.
